All I needed to do was get the kids in bed and I could go back to work. Although work was going to be the last thing on my mind after what had happened with Brianna a few days before.

The two of us had been acting like nothing at all had happened, but the truth was we could both tell there was something off between us. And why wouldn’t there be? I’d seen her naked, bare as the day she was born, in that bathroom when she’d been cleaning herself off after the paint incident. And she had looked so good, so criminally good, that it had made my head spin. I wanted her. I needed her. I lay awake at night, thinking about how it would have felt to trace my fingers over the lush curves of her body, how it would feel to caress her hips and her waist and the curve of her breasts.

But I couldn’t let myself go there. No, Brianna was doing too good a job as my nanny for me to think about fucking it up with something as base as sex. The kids adored her, especially Cait – she loved having her around, and would try to secure her attention for as long as she could when Brianna was still in the house. And everything had been running a little smoother since she had arrived, too. Meals came out on time, the house was cleaner, I never had those mad, last-minute dashes to get everything done in time before Connor needed to leave for school. Our lives just felt...easier.

But that didn’t mean I was having an easy time shaking the image of her naked form from my mind. It would have been so easy to just step toward her in that moment, reach out and touch her. I didn’t want her to feel threatened working with me, so I’d kept my hands pointedly to myself and avoided her as much as I could over the last few days. But I knew she could tell what was on my mind.

I put the kids to bed that evening, having sent Brianna home after dinner. When the nights got dark and it was time to put the kids to sleep, I knew that I was in a dangerous place. Because once Cait and Connor were down for the night, we were the only two people in the house, and I didn’t want to lure any more temptation in our direction than I already had.

I read Cait a story, but she was down for the count as soon as her head hit the pillow, more or less – Brianna had taken her for a walk earlier in the day and she seemed tired out for a change. Normally, getting her to bed was a nightmare, but with Brianna, everything was simpler.

I decided I would make it an early night as well. I’d been working my ass off the last few days just to keep out of her
